I always felt that the neck is the most open part of our body. Most of the garments open it and some that cover it (like a turtleneck) and provide sufficient insulation. Scarf good for adults but too uncomfortable for little. I always wanted to make a buttoned scarf for my daughter, but I had another consideration. Her skin is too sensitive for poly materials such as fleece, acrylic wool. I'm pretty sure it will have a severe eczema on the skin if I force her to wear such a thing. Now, when the cold weather came, I was forced to look for solutions to this issue with a scarf. It turns out that the solution is very simple. The side adjacent to the body to make of cotton. Voila!
If You want to have your kid was a scarf-collar, here's how to do it.
Materials:
1. A piece of woolen cloth.
2. A piece of cotton fabric.
Preparing the pattern:
The best way is to prepare in advance a template on newspaper, wrapping paper or any large sheet of paper. This you will save yourself a lot of time in the future. Also, when you have a pattern, you will feel much more confident making the product.
For my 2-year-old child I cut a paper strip of 12.5 inches x 5 inches. Then mark on the same side 12.5 inches 3 inches from the corner. Now cut off the triangle. This is your template.
Cut one piece of fleece and a piece of cotton fabric with a pattern. Make sure you cut along the fold as shown in the diagram above.
How to fold fabric on top of each other (right sides together).
Sew around the edge, with the exception of a 5 cm hole for the reversing.
Corners.
Turn inside out.
I don't top stitch it because the top stitching may make it stiffer and I wanted it very convenient for kids.
Optional: applique
Cut three or four small triangle.
Place them in a diagonal line going opposite to the slant of the scarf. Sew slowly around the edge of each triangle. Done.
Sew on buttons:
Put the scarf on the child and mark the place for the buttons and openings.
Sew a button on one side and make a hole on the other. Make sure you sew a button on fleece side.
Done!
It's so simple and quick to make. I've done a lot for my daughter and a couple for gifts. What would you do? Left or gave?
